Load transfer platforms over rigid inclusions – Overview and comparison of analytical and numerical solutions The installation of mineral, granular load transfer platforms (LTP) between a structure and a deep foundation, consisting of rigid inclusions (RI), significantly influences the load distribution between the RI and the soft soil in between. Precise knowledge of the load distribution is required for the correct design of the LTP and the RIs, as well as the structure founded on them. Several calculation approaches have been developed for quantifying the load distribution, which are mostly based on laboratory or large‐scale test results, from the results of which analytical approaches have been developed. Firstly, a selection of analytical calculation approaches for load distribution are presented, secondly the influence of various parameters on the load distribution is illustrated and discussed with the aid of finite element calculations. For small thicknesses of the LTP, the FE calculations show a high degree of agreement with a punching shear mechanism. At a certain thickness of the LTP, depending on various boundary conditions, the FE calculations show a vault formation, which can be described by a local shear failure. The punching of the RI into the LTP can be regarded as the upper limit of load redistribution to the RI. Numerous comparative calculations have shown that the two mechanisms of punching shear and local shear failure are sufficient in many cases to estimate the load distribution even without FE calculations.
