- Abstract
This article reports that Elise Herz, the daughter of a Czech businessman, wrote a letter to the directors of the Israeli Cultural Communities in Vienna, Austria and Prague, Czech Republic, requesting their permission to start a foundation for a children's hospital in Jerusalem, Israel in 1855 in honor of her deceased Jewish parents, Simon and Babette Lämel. Topics discussed include how many Jewish people were living in poverty in Israel during this time, how Herz and her sister Franziska v. Salemfels became the directors of the Israeli Child-Care Institution in Prague, as well as how there were several other philanthropic initiatives for Israeli charities in Vienna during the 18th century. Also mentioned is that Herz hired the Bohemian author Ludwig August Frankl to be her secretary.
