Businesses are facing tremendous global challenge to become Greener and Sustainable. There are pressures on them regarding their sustainable performance and of compliance with the regulatory norms set by the government and the community. Environmental performance is an integral aspect of Sustainable development and has gained profound attention in recent years. Lack of adherence to sustainability norms has been a cause of concern in developing countries, especially in the SME sector. Many of the industries have been shut down or they are at the verge of closure due to their inability to comply with the sustainability norms leading to decline in production and exports. Although various researches have been conducted in this field, the problem of Environmental quality still remains an issue that needs to be addressed properly. The purpose of this paper is to study Environmental issues of SMEs and present a holistic framework incorporating the various aspects of environmental quality to assess the performance of Small and Medium Enterprises. This paper reviews studies on Sustainable performance, SMEs performance measurement and Environmental performance. Environmental quality has been taken as the broad perspective having Waste management, Diversity protection, Ecosystem balance and Energy conservation as four measures under which different metrics have been identified. Appropriate indicators under the metrics have been developed in order to evaluate the performance of SMEs.
