- Abstract
Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition characterized by severe, unilateral, recurrent and paroxistic pain which appears in the territory of sensory distribution of the trigeminal nerve. It can be classified as "classic" or "symptomatic" depending on the presence or absence of neurological deficit. If there is a structural lesion within the nerve with accompanying motor or sensory deficit, the condition is termed "symptomatic". When there is no structural anomaly or there is only neurovascular conflict, the condition is termed "classic". There are several medications for the treatment of this condition. Carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine have the highest degree of evidence regarding their efficacy. When medications don't provide adequate relief, there are several surgical options including percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy, which among the different surgical options has the best cost/benefit ratio. We present the case of a patient who suffered chronically from essential trigeminal neuralgia who underwent percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy with excellent relief of pain and improvement in overall quality of life.
