- Abstract
The article explores the movement to unify currency in Japan during the Tokugawa shogunate in the 17th century. It explores the processes that led to unification, examines how unification took place and discusses the impact that unification had on the economy of the Japanese archipelago. The introduction of the Kan'ei tsūhō copper coin under the Tokugawa shogunal government eventually led to the development of a three-currency system in Japan. The article examines the motivation behind the decision to produce a unified currency which included a desire to control foreign trade.
