- Abstract
The article presents research into serum and salivary antibodies and their relation to cariogenic bacteria in humans. Particular attention is paid to examining antibodies to cell wall preparations of cariogenic bacteria of seven strains of Streptococcus in both serum and parotid saliva to determine the relationship between these antibodies and the development of carious lesions. Results revealed a positive correlation in subjects with active caries between serum immunoglobulin G and Streptococcus mutans (serotypes c and a) and the decayed/missing/filled (DMF) teeth index. Findings suggest that serum antibodies may contribute to dental caries immunity in humans.
