- Authors
Riseman, Noah
- Abstract
The article discusses the life of Aboriginal Vietnam-War veteran David Cook in order to highlight the relationship between the armed forces and the Stolen Generations, Australian indigenous children who were removed from their families as a result of government policy, post-World War II. Cook's childhood at the Kinchela Boys Home in Kempsey, New South Wales is highlighted, including discussions of institutionalized labour and racism. The psychological effects of Cook's service in the Vietnam War are described, and his trouble adjusting to family life and problems with violence are highlighted. The author notes the trend of anti-social behavior among Stolen Generations survivors.
