- Title
"Everyone has interests": A red herring.
- Authors
Öberg, Gunilla; Scheringer, Martin
- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of addressing conflicts of interest (COIs) in the assessment of chemicals, waste, and pollution. The authors argue that COIs should not be automatically associated with wrongdoing, but rather seen as a potential risk to providing unbiased advice. They emphasize the need for carefully defined and regularly reviewed COI policies to protect the integrity of organizations and decisions that impact public health. The authors also address the misconception that everyone has interests, clarifying that COIs arise when personal interests conflict with the interests of the organization being advised. They highlight the importance of diverse perspectives in research teams to avoid biased studies and encourage discussions about values and societal goals. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for clear COI rules, transparency, and public trust in order to effectively manage pollution caused by synthetic substances.
