- Authors
GIROUD, VINCENT
- Abstract
The article discusses changes to French opera during the 20th century. The author discusses the effect of the Great Depression on opera performances in France and notes how French composers such as Charles Koechlin and Ernest Chausson shifted their focus away from writing operas as audiences expressed interest in foreign operas. The nationalization of the Opéra and Opéra-Comique opera houses and opera performances during the Nazi occupation of France are discussed.
