- Abstract
This article demonstrates that Quebec fiction has managed to cross linguistic and cultural borders and create its own space in the Spanish and Catalan literary fields despite the many dissemination obstacles minority literatures face. This is due to actions taken by institutional actors "affiliated" with the Canadian federal government and the Quebec provincial government. Such investments are motivated by the fact that translated literature is considered a cultural diplomacy tool that can be used to build abroad a positive brand image for Canada and for Quebec - one that will make them internationally competitive. However, once the texts chosen for translation leave the institutional networks, they enter target-space networks, where they are recontextualized. In this new context, they will inevitably be axio-ideologically resemantized by agents from the target fields, and Canada or Quebec will therefore be represented in ways that may be vastly different than originally desired by the institutional actors who encouraged the literary transfer. Thus, this article illustrates not only what actions the institutional actors can take, but also the limits of these actions. Further, it highlights the ambivalent relationships established between these institutional actors and the agents who belong to the literary field : Quebec publishers, as well as Spanish and Catalan publishers, who have the last word on which works are selected for translation.
