- Abstract
This article examines the perceived fin de siècle period manifested in postmodernism and poststructuralism. Postmodernism is mainly preoccupied with literary criticism and theory, with semiotics and narrative, with metacriticism, narratology, and theories of the grotesque. Many postmodernists believe that philosophy and sociology are dead, or nearly dead, and that they have a right to deal with subjects outside their profession. Attempts have been made in some quarters to develop new milestones on the road to a postmodern sociology and political science. The earlier fin de siècle period also suggested a break with past traditions, but it had no scientific ambitions.
