- Title
A Natural and Artificial Homeland: East German Science-Fiction Film Responds to Kubrick and Tarkovsky.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article examines how the East German science fiction films "Signals: A Space Adventure" (Signale -- Ein Weltraumabenteuer), directed by Gottfried Kolditz, and "Eolomea," directed by Hermann Zschoche, reflect the social and political conditions of the country under the control of the Socialist Unity Party (SED). It describes the plots of both films to explore ways in which the futuristic themes of the films were shaped by East German ideals regarding socialism, the German concept of heimat, and utopian realism based on Marxism and Leninism. It also discusses how the cinematography of the East German science fiction genre was similar to the U.S. film "2001: A Space Odyssey," directed by Stanley Kubrick, and the Soviet film "Solaris," directed by Andrei Tarkovsky.
