- Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses the role that the ideology of white supremacy played in bringing the Democratic Party to power in the 1898 North Carolina elections, with a particular focus on the cartoonist Norman Ethre Jennett's (who is also known as Sampson Huckleberry) racist comic strips. An overview of Jennett's racist depictions of African Americans, including the depiction of the putative vulnerability of white women in the face of black men, is provided.
