- Abstract
An essay is presented on black-owned record stores in North Carolina during the 1960s and 1970s. According to the author, African American consumers and record retailers created a welcoming, respectful, and community-based consumer culture, and the stores themselves functioned as public spaces and meeting places. Details on challenges faced by African Americans in the music industry are also presented. Other topics include popular attitudes towards business, self-esteem, and racism.
