Several short essays are presented on depictions of the Southern U.S. in popular American motion pictures, including "Cold Mountain," "Sherman's March," and "Ode to Billie Joe." Several writers and filmmakers, including Alice Walker, Allan Gurganus, and Randall Kenan, discuss their personal experiences as viewers of such films. Topics include the film industry in Hollywood, California, southern literature, and attitudes towards the south in the northern U.S.
