- Abstract
Objective: to describe the importance of the individual changes caused by the need to perform a colostomy, and the importance of nursing care. Methodology: this study is a literature review, with selection of articles published from 1999 to 2009, in national journals, in databases SciELO, LILACS and the Ministry of Health, using the following terms to search: colostomy nursing care, adaptation. The papers were cataloged and analyzed, trying to summarize what the authors put on the physiological, behavioral, emotional and social changes that occur after the intervention, for which it is necessary that the person is re-structured in order to maintain their physical and emotional. Results: the need to broaden the focus of work of professionals who deal with colostomy patients, in order to go beyond the individual's biological body and include an understanding of references adopted by those involved in the process. Conclusion: should implement systematic interventions, since the diagnosis of the disease, following all the stages of life of people in order to contribute to a better acceptance of the changes caused by colostomy and promote an improvement in their quality of life.
