- Abstract
This article focuses on the efficacy and effectiveness of the use of natural gas in blast furnaces. This method of injecting natural gas into blast furnaces was chosen so as to improve the conditions for its mixing with the blast and keep the gas pipe from being obstructed by slag during emergencies. The experience gained thus far in the use of natural gas in blast furnaces and present knowledge of the smelting operation show that the efficiency attained by using this gas in smelting depends on two conditions: first, it depends on the completeness of its oxidation in the tuyere zone, which in turn determines the amount of heat released in the furnace from the combustion of the carbon of the natural gas; second, it depends on the distribution of the ore in the charge and the distribution of the gas flow over the radius of the furnace, which both affect the extent to which the reducing potential of the gas is utilized inside the furnace. A simplified method of calculation is described here which is suggested to be used to evaluate the energy losses connected with the incomplete combustion of methane in a blast furnace.
