- Abstract
Financial development can be expressed as the development of financial institutions or organizations, financial markets and instruments. This concept makes positive contributions to increasing savings and the financial intermediation process. This can increase the quantity, quality and efficiency levels of investments. Environmental quality is the ability to transfer all natural resources in nature to future generations without deterioration and to ensure the continuity of the living population. In this respect, environmental quality is very important. The increase in economic activities causes many environmental problems. Environmental problems negatively affect economic development and other structures in the economy. Effective use of environmental resources is very important in achieving economic development. Environmental quality and the factors that determine it are seriously discussed in the literature. Carbon dioxide emission is the most used indicator in determining environmental quality. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between energy consumption, environmental quality and financial development in BRICT and MINT economies using the panel simultaneous equations system analysis method for the period 1990-2014. With the established system of simultaneous equations, the mutual relationship between energy consumption, environmental quality and financial development has been revealed. In the econometric application, two-stage least squares estimation technique was used for energy consumption, environmental quality and financial development. According to the analysis results, the increase in environmental quality, financial development and urbanization has had a positive impact on energy consumption. The increase in energy consumption, financial development and urbanization has led to the deterioration of environmental quality. While the increase in environmental quality, foreign trade and gross capital formation made a positive contribution to financial development, energy consumption had a negative impact. Based on these results, it is stated that for the country groups considered, financial development does not enable the use of environmentally friendly and clean technologies in the field of energy, on the contrary, production activities that may cause environmental problems are carried out. It can be said that the developments in the field of finance do not have an increasing effect on environmental quality. In this case, it is recommended to strengthen the financial structure and subsequently increase the environmental quality for the countries considered. It is possible that policies implemented from this perspective will play an important role in increasing environmental quality at national and international levels.
