- Abstract
This article proposes an approach for supervising mental health counseling interns. An integrated approach to supervision has been developed by combining the developmental model of Littrell, Lee-Borden. and Lorenz (1979) and Bernard's (1979, 1997) discrimination model. These two models were chosen based on compatibility and the ease with which each can be utilized by novice and experienced supervisors. Our approach is also useful in that it can be used regardless of the theoretical orientation of the supervisor or supervisee. This approach integrates supervisor roles, intern skills, and stages of the supervision process. Four stages of supervisee development are described along with proposed supervisor roles and intern skills at each stage. The integrated approach provides a practical tool for conceptualizing and implementing the supervision process. Supervisors will find flexibility in the roles they assume with supervisees, and supervisees will benefit from a model that considers their own developing processes and differing needs.
