- Abstract
Foreign language teachers are faced with numerous challenges and tasks, one of which is the development of their students’ reading skill. In the litearture related to the development of reading skills we constantly come across two key terms, cognition and metacognition. If cognition is defined as our conscious thinking, metacognition is “cognition about cognition”, i.e. thinking about our own thinking. In relation to the process of reading, metacognition encompasses students’ knowledge and regulation of reading strategies. Metacognitive learning strategies involve thinking about the learning process, planning their learning, observing their understanding and evaluating themselves when the learning process is completed. Cognitive strategies, on the other hand, are more directly related to the learning task and involve direct manipulation and transformation of the learning material. In this paper we will emphasize the term metacognition and its historic development. We will also focus on the aspects of metacognition as well as the components that comprise this process, with a particular focus on the role of metacoginition in the reading process and the development of reading skills.
