- Abstract
Environmental and nature protection is one of the most important and key policies of European Union that began to develop after the 1970s. Since than EU has agreed on several hundred directives, regulations and decisions covering every aspect of it. This policy attracts the attention and interest of many institutions and organizations around the world, because it's addressing current environmental problems at local, national and international levels in order to achieve the protection, restoration and improvement of the environment and to provide a better life for current and future generations. It covers important areas, such as: water and air pollution, management of waste and chemicals, biotechnology, nature protection, industrial pollution and risk management, noise and radiation protection. Thanks to the constant changes in the legislation in this field, the European Union today has some of the highest requirements in the field of environmental protection. Building on a diverse literature this article examines the cooperation between the European Union and Republic of Bulgaria in the environmental sector. Republic of Bulgaria has been a member of the European Union since January 1st 2007. In the ensuing years, the environmental policy has been largely integrated with the EU's environmental policy. This has meant historical change and has been a demanding challenge, not only for the Ministry of Environment and Water in Republic of Bulgaria, but also for the whole national coordination system for environmental matters. The research area is the environmental policy in the Republic of Bulgaria. The research subject are the changes that occur in Bulgarian environmental policy as a result of interaction with the EU. The purpose of this research is on the one hand to analyse how European environmental policy impacted the Bulgarian environmental law, and on the other to show in which areas Bulgaria has made significant improvements and where the country still have to make changes in order to meet the EU requirements. In view of the above research area, research subject and purpose of the research, the author sets out the following research tasks: to provide a clear overview of the development of the Bulgarian environmental policy and to outline the achieved results and challenges for Bulgaria in the environmental area after its accession as an official member of the European Union. The study is divided into several main parts, in which, based on various literary and statistical sources, the EU and Bulgaria's environmental co-operation has been examined from its beginning to the present. The main conclusions of the study show that Bulgarian environmental legislation reflects accurately the environmental requirements agreed at the EU level, but its implementation remains a challenge. The main areas in which the country has the most serious environmental problems are air quality, collection and treatment of urban wastewater and implementation of nature legislation.
