- Abstract
Transverse myelitis is a very rare disease, and in addition the data show that approximately 1/3 of individuals recover with little or only minor symptoms, 1/3 are left with a moderate degree of permanent disability and 1/3 have virtually no recovery and are left severely functionally disabled. Therefore the objectives of this study is to analyze the demographic factors as determinants of quality of life in patients with transverse myelitis. In this study 96.7% were females and 3.3% males, females had the highest average of quality of life (M = 80.34); the highest percentage 26.7% were aged 51-60 years, while the highest average of quality of life was reported from 31- 40 years old (M = 84.90); 86.7% of patients live in the city and 13.3% in the village; 40% of patients have a high level of education while only 3.3% are uneducated, the majority 40% have self-reported higher quality of life; 66.7% are married while 21% divorced, married patients self-reported better quality of life, 36.7% of patients work part-time (M = 83.38); 38.3% of patients are of high status and 38.3% are of low economic status, patients with high economic status have self-reported quality of life (M = 88.48); 41.7% of patients have severe physical consequences (inability to walk) and 41.7% have mild consequences (assisted walking), patients with no physical consequences after illness achieved an average of better quality of life ( 85.52).Patients are diagnosed with transverse myelitis, for measuring Quality of Life we have used the WHOQOL BREF, there was also another questionnaire for demographic data. The results of our study showed that from all study variables it was found that only some variables have statistically significant differences as determinants of quality of life of patients with transverse myelitis even that statistically significant differences were found in the employment variable [(F (7.52) = 2.887 p = 0.13]; economic status [(F (2.57) = 7.766 p = 0.00) and the consequences of disease [(F (2.57) = 3.346 p = 0.42],but, results of our study haven’t shown statistically significant differences of perception on the quality of life in more factors even in terms of gender ( sig, .910), age (sig. .113), place of living ( sig. ,364), education (sig. ,456), marital status (sig. , 662). Conclusion of this study is that Transverse myelitis is a serious disease that affects patients' quality of life despite demographic factors , for that reason our results didn’t found statistically significant differences in many variables.
