- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses the teaching of the young adult novel "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers in light of postmodern literary characteristics of young adult fiction. It examines the struggles of teenagers to follow the plot of the book due to the author's use of such literary devices as flashbacks, text types, and modalities as well as a nonlinear plot. The authors identify various postmodern aspects of the young adult novel including the theme of identity, the use of ambiguity, and genre eclecticism. Topics include the use of online chat forums by students who are attempting to understand the novel, implications for teenagers' literacy education, and the teaching of postmodern young adult literature.
