- Abstract
This research intended to further our understanding of the construct grit, defined as maintaining persistence and passion when pursuing long-term goals (Duckworth et al., 2007). The study had 2 aims: first to confirm a correlation between the construct of grit and an individual's attachment style and second, to examine this relationship in high school seniors from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The study was conducted on 42 lower socioeconomic, 18-year-old high school seniors at 3 different school sites. Self-report measures were used in addition to a story-telling attachment measure. The results of this exploratory study provided further evidence that there is a connection between attachment and grit. Low-income high school students with insecure attachment patterns were found to be less gritty.
