- Abstract
The article discusses the ways in which evangelical theology characteristic of the religious revivals of the First and Second Great Awakenings has shaped the Baptist understanding of the theology surrounding baptism. Baptist understandings of sacramental theology during this time period are analyzed by the author in relation to their overall notions of baptismal theology. Evangelical and Baptist understandings of salvation are examined. The use of river baptism and rejection of infant baptism by various Baptist preachers are outlined.
