- Title
Maybe It's Time to Dust Off John Leland.
- Authors
Gourley, Bruce T.
- Abstract
The author recounts the story of Baptist John Leland who advocated for the separation of the church and the state. The author states that Leland supported mail delivery on Sundays at a time when many Protestants sought to discontinue the practice on religious grounds. The author recalls that in 1894, Congress exempted religious institutions from paying income tax and in 1917 allowed taxpayers to reduce gifts to religious organizations. He stresses that eliminating religion-based tax favoritism would allow churches to address politics from a pulpit.
