- Abstract
The article "Heterodox Economics: Alternatives to the Economic Mainstream" by Arne Heise discusses the dominance of the neoclassical mainstream in economics. It presents various heterodox approaches that offer alternative theories to neoclassical orthodoxy. These approaches include post-Keynesianism, complexity economics, the regulation school, evolutionary economics, feminist economics, and ecological economics. The financial crisis of 2008 led to criticism of mainstream economics and increased popularity of alternative approaches. It emphasizes that neoclassical orthodoxy supports financial capitalism, while heterodox theories are critical of the system and aim for reform or transformation of the economic and social order. The article specifically focuses on the post-Keynesian and complexity economics perspectives on neoclassical-based economic policy. It emphasizes that there are various schools of post-Keynesianism that can contribute to explaining current economic problems but are often neglected in public debate. The author calls for more chairs with heterodox economists to bring alternative perspectives into the discussion about the future. It is noted that there is currently no independent heterodox theory that could replace neoclassical orthodoxy, but rather a mutual enrichment of the different approaches should be sought to further develop the discipline and meet practical requirements.
