- Abstract
Although protected natural areas are considered an important tool for environmental educators, the use of these areas by teachers is still incipient. The present study sought to examine how teachers perceive the use of protected natural areas to promote environmental education (EE), and to assess the level of relationship with nature and their environmental attitudes, assuming that these two factors are associated with their perception., as well as assess whether the training area can influence the results. The study has a quantitative approach based on the survey method, using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) scale, to assess environmental attitudes, the Nature Retadendness (RN) scale, to verify the level of relationship with nature, and teachers' perception questions about the use of protected natural areas. The teachers' perception was, in general, positive. However, they showed less support for the effective practice of AE in these areas. The NEP scale presented inconsistencies for this study. However, teachers showed a moderate level of relationship with nature, which may be reflecting on teachers' perception of the use of natural areas for teaching. We did not find a significant difference in the level of relationship with nature between teachers in the areas of Humanities and Applied Sciences. Thus, given the relevance of interaction with nature, it is essential that people experience it in order to create emotional bonds and environmentally responsible lifestyles and overcome the low connection with nature.
