- Abstract
The article discusses research on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as an underlying factor of eating disorders. It references a National Women's Study co-authored by Tim Brewerton that was published in "International Journal of Eating Disorders" in 1997 that established assault as a factor for the development of bulimia nervosa. Brewerton noted that disordered eating behaviors like purging, may be used as an avoidance mechanism to numb painful feelings or block painful memories.
