- Title
Exploited and Mobilized: Poverty and Work in Contemporary Manga.
- Authors
PENNEY, MATTHEW
- Abstract
The article looks at the problem of domestication in the context of exploitation and mobilization of labor as depicted in contemporary manga. It asserts that manga provides a more realistic portrait of the aspirations and difficulties of the youth seeking work in contrast to the prevalent tendency to blame Japan's economic difficulties by characterizing them as lazy or selfish. The author shows that manga provides a venue to actively and publicly grapple issues omitted in mainstream media.
