- Abstract
The Broadest DiverDytiscus latissimusLinnaeus, 1758 is a Euro-Western Siberian boreal species. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, its numbers have decreased significantly in a considerable part of its range. The aim of this paper is to summarize data on the distribution and habitats ofD. latissimusin the Baltic States – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This water beetle is protected in all Baltic States, but so far the data have not been analysed in depth and the species’ current conservation status has not been assessed. The presented analysis of the species’ distribution and habitat preference is based on all available data, both published and unpublished. At present,D. latissimusinhabits the entire Baltic region; however, its populations in the eastern parts are more numerous and located closer to one another. Several new populations have been discovered in recent years.D. latissimuswas found in a wide range of habitats characterized by noticeably varying physical and chemical properties of water in the reservoirs. Available zoogeographic information on the habitats ofD. latissimusin the Baltic area makes it possible to examine the issue of the species conservation not only on a local scale but globally as well.
