- Abstract
This article presents information on a student-directed project work; assessing health needs of asylum seekers, homeless people or the prison population; conducted by undergraduate medical students at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in England. This project work was aimed to provide learning opportunities for students of public health. Many academic staff felt that facilitating medical student projects represented a diversion from research work. The research project was performed by means of evaluating the relationship between socio-economic status and seatbelt use, and a survey of public opinion on banning smoking in public places.
