- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of universal masking in healthcare settings to ensure the safety of patients and employees. It challenges the assertion that masking requirements have only "incremental benefits" due to COVID-19 transitioning to a more stable phase. The article emphasizes that vulnerable populations, such as individuals with disabilities and older adults, who account for a significant percentage of COVID-19 deaths, would disagree with this assertion. It also highlights the risk of long COVID-19 and the airborne nature of the virus, making standard respiratory precautions insufficient. The article argues that universal masking is necessary to prevent nosocomial COVID-19 transmission and protect the rights and safety of patients, particularly those who are hard-of-hearing or have limited English proficiency. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of trust and safety in healthcare settings and the need to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable.
