- Abstract
Currently there is much interest on the surgical training trainees receive. This has become more structured over recent years. We have designed a simple device for the accurate teaching and practice of surgical knots. The knot trainer consists of a section of wood into which eight metal eyelets are screwed. The knots are tied around the pairs of eyelets with each component of the knot being separated so that it is easily possible to ensure that it is tied correctly. We have tested the tying of the classic surgeon's knot using the knot trainer on residents of varying experience in our department as well as medical students. After a single teaching session, a 12-point index of correct technique improved from 46% to 80%. The correct technique for the tying of knots in surgery is imperative. We feel that this simple trainer helps trainees get a clear understanding of the entire knot, aids with the learning and practice of individual knots, and clears up misapprehensions.
