- Abstract
Catholic booklets for the soldiers printed in the Italian Kingdom until the eve of the First World War spread «Italian nation» projects drafted by catholic circles which, since the 1890's had been interested in the military world. These projects revised the Christian concept of sacrifice in «patriotic» terms and often associated it with an authoritarian and confessional model of society, army and state. Precisely, most of the examined texts shaped Christianity as a «school of sacrifice» able to strengthen Italian soldiers and citizens' love of homeland and spirit of obedience guaranteeing an efficient army, a stable state and social order. So, this source let to get the birth of several forms (mostly authoritarian) of «catholic patriotism» in Italy.
