- Abstract
Instead of focusing on excess deaths, we think it would be helpful to investigate differences between deaths associated with COVID-19 vs other causes to better understand the effects of different COVID-19 variants on population health. It is also important to consider geographic variation when interpreting the findings from the study.[1] In Massachusetts, high vaccine uptake likely decreased severe outcomes from COVID-19 during the Delta wave but may have been less effective against the more evasive Omicron variant. Comment & Response B To the Editor b A recent study[1] reported an increase in excess mortality during the Omicron vs Delta waves of COVID-19 in Massachusetts.
