- Abstract
This essay detects some archaic traits that still functionally operate in Irish and Welsh sagas. Within the pastoral social world the swineherd features a role inherently linked with the sacral and juridical dimension of the Indo-European organization of ideology, the cowherd with the military forces and the shepherd with the economical and productive aspects. This offers a complementary image to the Homeric world, where Ulysses' taking over is made possible by formal action and substantial interfering of the 'divine swineherd' Eumaios versus the established new deal put forward by the suitors. This is a good example of conservative attitudes Middle Ages show in relation to the inheritance from a common tradition that is dealt with the means of a procedure of acculturation.
