- Abstract
Lithuanian institutions of higher non-university education pay much attention to practical training of future specialists who could meet labor market needs of and contribute to achievement of strategic objectives of the country. The practical training of college students is a complex task - it is not easy to apply in practice theoretical knowledge gained during the study years. The students assigned to perform their practical training in companies do not always have an opportunity to be involved in all departments' professional activity, be familiarized with this organization' documentation and its working principles and it leads to the lack of possibility to develop their theoretical competences, acquired during classes and seminars. Thus, it is not accidentally that business practical training firms (BPTF) started being created in educational institutions, particularly in colleges. Nowadays, many Lithuanian colleges have set up mock - BPTFs where future managers can practically both apply their theoretical knowledge and improve management competency. Competency concept is understood differently by different scientists; however competency in terms of methodology means possessing particular specialist skills to successfully perform professional functions. Competency relies upon the person's ability to feel and recognize certain existing situations but not upon his or her personal characteristics. According to the research, the business practical training firms' activity is very important as it helps young people integrate into the business world more easily and acquire some key competencies, such as personal, (personal development, communication, and cooperation abilities) , social (ability to collaborate with teammates and leaders and create an appropriate environment) professional, (including both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for business tasks performing) and managing ones (essential for specific work and the company's management). Most of these competencies start being molded in the course of studies and BPTFs consolidate them. Therefore, the student may feel in practice how competent in one or another company's business activity he or she is. Due to BPTFs, the future manager deepens his or her theoretical knowledge and applying it to practical situations gets a high level management competence, which, in its turn, will let him or her adapt it successfully in the labour market. These days, professional knowledge and skills of employees based on exceptional management and staff competencies are developing into key advantages of competitiveness. Future management professionals should possess good management and leadership skills; they must be creative, skillful and motivated, able to meet both future clients' and employees' needs and expectations. The study showed that successful and effective leadership is impossible without a professional managerial competency, which includes the manager's knowledge, skills, experience, attitude and basic personal qualities. In a competitive labour market, only highly qualified and professionally competent managers are capable to work successfully.
