- Abstract
This document explores the racial disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), a nonatherosclerotic arteriopathy. While the North American Registry for FMD shows a higher prevalence of FMD in White patients, there is no genetic association between FMD and any race. A retrospective chart review of patients seen by an Emory FMD clinician revealed that Black patients experienced longer delays in diagnosis and received less imaging compared to White patients. These disparities may be attributed to limited access to specialized providers and hospitals, as well as lower suspicion of FMD among healthcare providers. The study also highlights differences in comorbidities and diagnostic imaging between racial groups, but it is important to note that the study has limitations, including its retrospective nature and small sample size. Further research is necessary to gain a better understanding of and address these racial differences in FMD.
