- Abstract
The «addictive» use of the communication and information digital technologies is examined in this article, under the lens of the concept of «civilization malaise», as theorized by Sigmund Freud in the 1930›s. As we turn to a genealogical perspective to investigate this matter, it is considered that in the last couple of decades a great historical transformation has occurred, which affected the way subjectivity is configured and also the ways in which suffering is experienced, making evident its distance from the modern era that motivated the Freudian observations. The contemporary subjects no longer identify with the highly disciplined citizens of the industrial society, whom, in the name of the «common good», accepted submission and an internalized, moralistic, and law-abiding authority that they felt the need to obey while repressing other impulses. Therefore, the restlessness that provokes the growing dependency to connecting to digital networks, a voluntary act although difficult to (self) control, is an important element that is representative of these changes.
