- Title
Photographs and Signatures: Absence, Presence, and Temporality in Barthes and Derrida.
- Authors
Wike, Lori
- Abstract
The article examines the fundamental conflict in the claims of Roland Barthes in the book "Camera Lucida" regarding the persistence and presence of the referent in photography and Jacques Derrida in the book "Signature, Event, Context" on the structural iterability of writing. The intersections of the two positions is discussed and elucidated by using the perspective of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The unique temporality that the subject of death occupies in relation to photograph and the signature is also cited.
