Masks, Interface of Past and Future: Nomura Mannojō's Shingigaku.
Abstract
The article examines the life and work of kyŌgen actor Nomura MannojŌ. He is best known for his work in studying Shingigaki ("true" gigaku), which was a type of Japanese mask performance from the seventh to thirteenth centuries. MannojŌ's work attempted to re-establish the ancient mask performance genre. The article examines the methodology that MannojŌ used in studying and recreating Shingigaki.
