- Abstract
The purpose of this work is to report the findings of an investigation about the application of little experiments, called desktop experiments, performed during theoretical classes in the area of Optics. In particular, the objective of the investigation was to evaluate the possibility of inclusion of these little experiments into the curriculum of the discipline, their value, considering the existence of dedicated experimental classes, the utility of using class time for this experiments, and, finally, the value of these little experiments in connection with the improvement of the students' learning process. During the first phase of the investigation were laid the foundations of an understanding of basic concepts about the teaching and learning processes, in particular, in the area of Physics. The link between theoretical teaching and experimentation in Physics was also considered deducing that a strong intellectual link exists between the two stages and that not always the two are performed in unison either temporarily or sequentially. The result of this first phase was the need of an integrated and direct experimental support during the teaching of the theory. In this way the students understand the theory more easily and also the structure of the class results more agreeable. During the second phase of the investigation, the students' reactions to the application of the experiments were observed during the classes together with their performance in solving exercises and developing an understanding of the physical phenomena described in the experiments. The investigation was completed with the application of a questionnaire relating the level of satisfaction of the students, their improvement in understanding the topics and suggestions for improvements of the experiments. In general the students responded enthusiastically to the application of the experiments and confirm an improvement of their learning process and grades displayed by them solving exercises and understanding the theory.
