- Abstract
In the Turkization and Islamization process of Anatolia, religious-social groups who came to the region between the 11th and the 13th centuries have had a great influence along with the Seljuk conquest and settlement policies. These groups dispersed to different parts of Anatolia from the beginning of the XI. century from central Asia, accelerated the emergence of Islam to Anatolian folk by carrying Sufism tradition based on Ahmed Yasevi who pioneered in expanding Islam in Central Asia. The dervishes were related to sects such as Yesevî, Vefâî, Nakşibendî, Rıfaî, Haydarî or Kalenderî. In this respect, all these groups were the agents of different religious sects and societies. These groups were called the Khorasan Erens in relation to the geography they came from or the way they followed. All these dervishes in the Evliya menakıbnames are also considered as immigrants from Horasan, that is, as Horasan Erens regardless of the sects they belong to. These groups played an important role on the religious and moral education of the regional folk by especially settling in rural areas. They were interested in agriculture or livestock in the areas, like a member of the society, they settled in. They represented more of a teaching that emphasized the mystic side of Islam and known for their menkıbes and miracles, teaching moral phrases, advices, poems and hymns. They also recommended the forgivingness of Allah, suggested fundamental human values, the clean heart of the human beings and toleration of those from other religions. It is still possible to come across tekkes, shrines, or graves belonging to these groups in different parts of Anatolia. These groups today are known as Baba, Dede or Evliya among people. In Nevşehir and its surroundings, such figures are called Khorasan Erens by the people. There are written records about some of these personalities whose names lived on till today with their tekke, shrine or graves. But the majority of them were brought up today with their oral tradition. This study aims to compilation and evaluate the teachings and the perception of these figures known as Khorasan Erens among the people in and around Nevşehir.
