- Authors
Welling, Lioba Ilona Luisa
- Abstract
The article discusses the issues behind the legal prohibition of techniques of genetic enhancement. It tackles the applicability of the concept of human dignity as provided for by Article 1 Paragraph 1 of the German Constitution. It analyzes the attempts to extend the consitutional provision to an abstract idea of mankind based on a particular notion of the sanctity of the human species' nature. It also suggests the need for functional equivalents of religious arguments to establish an extensive restriction of alterations to human nature.
