- Abstract
This article discusses a case of blackhead disease, also known as histomonosis, in a peafowl. The peafowl exhibited weight loss and was found to have a dilated cecum filled with a white caseous material and feces. Cytologic evaluation revealed a protozoal infection, likely Histomonas meleagridis, as well as nematodes. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of blackhead disease, with transmural ulcerative to granulomatous typhlitis. The article provides information on the transmission, clinical signs, and diagnostic methods for histomonosis, emphasizing the importance of environmental prevention and separate rearing of turkeys and chickens.
