Treasury services automation: How can local banks keep up with changing corporate demands?

- Abstract
Economic, market and regulatory forces are creating what may be termed a 'technology gap' between larger specialist institutions and smaller regional and mid-tier banks in the EMEA region. This divide is giving rise to a new banking model: one that BNY Mellon calls the 'manufacturer-distributor' collaboration model. This is designed to combine local and international best-practice solutions in order to address concerns such as the limited amounts of liquidity being offered by local banks, which in recent years has been a major cause of concern for local commerce. The model is predicated on the concept of the local bank manager leveraging the global transaction processing capabilities of major providers, with banks being either 'manufacturers' of transaction banking services and products, or 'distributors' of such services and products to their local client base - in a fashion that is best suited to the individual needs and requirements of their domestic market. As a result, local banks could be better able to keep pace with the increasing demands of their corporate clients for greater international reach and processing efficiency, while retaining core competencies and generating cost efficiencies. By extension, corporates also stand to gain from this form of bank collaboration. Enhanced local bank service provision, combined with local understanding and commitment, will give them a much wider base from which to access transaction banking solutions and services, as well as a smooth entry to previously uncharted international markets.
