- Abstract
While it may not be feasible to directly test whether early interventions prevent or delay BD onset, we can assess whether such interventions impact early symptoms, like mood lability and subthreshold manic symptoms. As clinicians, we view pre-diagnostic clinical staging as critical to enhancing timely diagnosis and treatment of BD and informing the more effective treatment of youth who present with non-BD psychopathology and poor psychosocial functioning. In his review of staging prior to bipolar disorder (BD) onset, Parker raises many important points about gaps in the literature and potential perils of introducing "staging" into clinical practice (e.g., overtreatment).
