- Abstract
The "Peace-building, Disarmament, Demobilization, Reintegration and Reincorporation" Research Group presents in this article an analysis of the participation of ex-combatants in the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) processes, with a special emphasis on the participation in the reintegration process in two countries that present an interesting experience: Northern Ireland and Colombia. To this end, a multidisciplinary approach is used, using theories and contributions from the discipline of international relations in the fiselds of specific studies of peace, conflict and DDR, as well as contributions from sociology to understand the concept of participation. Although in many cases a symbolic participation is found in the design of reintegration programs, it was analyzed that it often arises from the demobilized groups that manage to maintain cooperation networks among their members. Thus, public institutions that provide real guarantees of recognition of this participation allow the construction of a true participatory model of reintegration. This is important, since a greater number of peace-building initiatives by ex-combatants and a high level of participation of excombatants in reintegration programs seem to go hand in hand.
