- Title
Subdued by the Dyer's Hand: Dickens at Work in Bleak House.
- Authors
Paroissien, David
- Abstract
An essay is presented on how Charles Dickens was able to portray the relationship between entertainment and social criticism critical to a reader's experience, in the novel "Bleak House". Dickens was able to blend his aspiration to serve as a journalist and his ambition to entertain by narrating stories with happy endings. Based on the article, Dickens was criticized by other writers like Henry James and George Eliot of letting his work explain itself as evident from the short prefaces.
